From lighting outdoor spaces like car parks and sports grounds to providing wide area task lighting and security lighting, floodlights have become an integral part of modern lighting solutions. Floodlights have widespread applications in multiple environments like residential, commercial, and industrial settings. However, with so many different types of flood lighting available, and some being suited to specific operations, it’s common for some people to ask questions about different types of floodlights and their features, benefits, and applications.
To help anyone considering one (or more) of CORE Lighting’s range of floodlights, we’ve answered some frequently asked questions about floodlights and our three core floodlight models to help you gain a better understanding of our floodlights and which one(s) would be best for you.

What are floodlights and how do they work?
Let’s start with the basics – at the risk of teaching you to suck eggs.
Floodlights are high-intensity artificial lights designed to cover a wide area with bright illumination. The primary purpose of a floodlight is to light up a large area so that as much of it can be seen as possible – essentially “flooding” it with light. Floodlight’s produce wide beams of light for this purpose. Where a spotlight is designed to focus light on a tight area to illuminate specific points of interest, a floodlight is designed to light up as much as possible so that more can be seen.
Most floodlights consist of a powerful bulb, usually either an LED or halogen lamp, housed in a casing, which is normally weatherproof to some extent. Within the casing there will be a reflector to help direct and disperse the light over a larger area, making them ideal for large outdoor spaces. Floodlights can be controlled manually or automatically using sensors, and many come with adjustable features, allowing users to change the angle, direction, and sometimes the intensity of light.
What are the main uses for floodlights?
Floodlights can be utilised for a number of applications or serve multiple purposes due to their versatility and brightness. The most common applications are:
-
Outdoor Security
Floodlights are widely used for security purposes across residential, commercial, and industrial settings to deter intruders by illuminating dark areas around homes, commercial properties, industrial warehouses and buildings, and public spaces.
-
Sports Lighting
Floodlights are crucial in sports fields, stadiums, and recreational facilities and areas to enable outdoor activities to take place during the evening and night.
-
Enhanced Visibility
Floodlights are used on construction sites, parking lots, and industrial areas to improve visibility, which helps to improve health and safety, reduce accidents, and enhance productivity.
-
Aesthetics
Floodlights can also be used to highlight architectural features, landscaping elements, and monuments, adding dramatic effect to the environment. (Although we think this is best left to lamps like our wireless uplighters, the ColourPoint and ColourPoint Mini!)
-
Event Lighting
Much like for sports and construction sites, floodlights play a crucial role in outdoor events, festivals, and concerts, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for attendees.
Which is better: LED floodlights or halogen floodlights?
LED floodlights have rapidly gained increasing popularity and all but replaced older, traditional halogen floodlights in many applications, and for good reason too!
-
Energy Efficiency
LED floodlights are far more energy efficient than their halogen counterparts, consuming significantly less energy and resulting in reduced electricity consumption and bills, and a lower carbon footprint.
-
Longevity
LED floodlights have a longer lifespan, lasting up to 10 times longer than halogen bulbs. This, in turn, reduces maintenance costs and the frequency at which bulbs need replacing.
-
Durability
LED floodlights are more robust and shock-resistant than halogen bulbs, making them better suited for outdoor use in harsh weather conditions.
-
Brightness and colour options
LED floodlights offer a wide range of brightness levels and colour temperatures, allowing users to choose the best lighting to suit their specific needs.
Are floodlights difficult to install?
The installation difficulty entirely depends on the type of floodlight and the location of installation. Most fixed floodlights are designed for easy installation, like simple security floodlights or portable standalone plug-and-play LED floodlights that only require a power source. However, for more complex installations and hardwired floodlights, we recommend seeking professional assistance and advice to ensure proper installation and safety, along with meeting any application planning requirements.
CORE Lighting portable battery powered floodlights
At CORE Lighting, we offer portable, wireless floodlights that require no power source other than our powerful rechargeable batteries – although they also come with the capability to connect to mains power, if required.
Here are some common questions we get asked about our range of wireless battery powered flood lights. We’ll provide the answer to each of these questions with information about each product to help you differentiate between them and make an informed decision on which would best suit your application.
